Origin[]

Cerberus is a minor character in Disney's 1997 animated feature film "Hercules". It is a three-headed dog that belongs to Hades whose main duty is to guard the entrance to the Underworld.

Cerberus makes a brief appearance in the beginning of the film when Hades slowly moves down the River Styx and throws a piece of meet to the dog. Three heads of Cerberus start fighting for the steak while Hades moves further away.

Next time Cerberus is shown is the end of the film when Hercules tames the beast and rides it through the entrance to meet Hades and make him release Meg.

Cerberus also appears in "Hercules: The Series" and its most significant role is in the episode "Hercules and the Visit From Zeus". While Hades is plotting to take over Mount Olympus, Cerberus playfully interrupts, snatching a model of Olympus and causing havoc with Pain and Panic. Later, Hades is comically dragged around the Underworld by the energetic pup when Cerberus becomes fascinated by the Fates' all-seeing eye, much to the annoyance of the three hags. Hades retrieves the eye from Cerberus when he notices a mortal, revealed to be Zeus. Seizing an opportunity to get rid of his brother, Hades sends Cerberus after Zeus. The episode also discloses that Cerberus is a gift from Hades to Pain and Panic, who have pestered Hades for a pet.

An unexpected appearance of Cerberus happens in another Disney movie "Encanto" during the song "Surface Pressure" when Luisa sings about Hercules and wonders whether Hercules considered refusing to fight Cerberus ("Was Hercules ever, like, "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"?").
