Origin

Hermes is a supporting character in Disney's 1997 animated feature film, Hercules. He is an immortal God of travelers and a royal messenger, who lives on Mount Olympus with the rest of the Gods.

In addition to his role as a messenger and advisor, Hermes is also known for his mischievous nature. In Greek mythology, he was often portrayed as a trickster who enjoyed playing pranks on both humans and gods. He was also known for his ability to move quickly and was considered the fastest of all the gods.

Due to his status as a god, Hermes possesses an variety of divine powers and abilities. These include immortality, omnipresence, superhuman strength, and mastery over magic. He channels the power of his distinctive Caduceus staff to harness magical powers for varied uses.

In "Hercules" (1997), Hermes makes his debut at Hercules' infant celebration, bringing flowers for Hera and praising Zeus. He reappears during the arrival of the Titans and hastily informs Zeus and fellow gods, catalyzing the defense effort. Captured by Pain and Panic, he is eventually liberated by Hercules, regaining his glasses and dispelling the imps with his staff. The film's finale shows Hermes on Hercules' triumphal party, calling the Muses to sing with him.

Continuing in "Hercules: The Series", Hermes occasionally accompanies Hercules' adventures during his training on Phil's Island. In "Hercules and the Bacchanal", Hermes shows his friendship with Hercules by defending the island. Throughout the series, he goes by the Roman name "Mercury", as seen in "Hercules and the Romans".

Hermes' appearances in the "House of Mouse" are brief. In "Donald Wants to Fly", Donald Duck snatches Hermes' shoes in a pointless attempt to master flying.

Hermes' characteristic catchphrase "Babe", his practical spectacles, and his cinematic look were all influenced by voice actor Paul Shaffer.
