Origin
Phil is the tritagonist in Disney's 1997 animated feature film, "Hercules". He is a satyr who used to train all the mighty heroes of Ancient Greece but gave up and retired because none of them had managed to live up to Phil's expectations. When Zeus sends Hercules to him for a training, Phil does not believe the situation straight away but later on reluctantly agrees to assist.
When Hercules meets Phil on an island, the satyr is observing Nymphs bathing, but they flee in response to his presence. Hercules introduces himself and his purpose to Phil, who remains resistant, claiming to have retired from training after previously mentoring Jason, Odysseus, Perseus, Theseus, and Achilles—heroes whose efforts ultimately ended in failure. Phil recounts Achilles' humiliating defeat due to his vulnerable heel, which rendered him a laughingstock. Phil's reluctance to mentor another hopeful hero is evident, and even Hercules' impressive demonstrations of strength and his assertion of being Zeus' son do not sway him. It takes a humorous lightning bolt from Zeus (during the song "One Last Hope") striking Phil to finally convince him of Hercules' divine lineage and to agree to take him under his wing.
As time passes, Hercules undergoes rigorous training guided by Phil. Upon completion, they embark on their mission, flying toward the city of Thebes. However, their journey takes a turn when they hear the cries of Megara, leading them to believe she needs rescue from the centaur Nessus. While Hercules battles the centaur, Phil flirts with Meg but receives rejection, fueling his immediate distrust. Though Hercules triumphs over the centaur, Phil chastises him for novice mistakes made during the fight.
When Hercules has to fight a hydra in the canyon, Phil offers coaching from the sidelines. Hercules defeats the Hydra but faces Phil's critique for his errors during the battle. Phil's role gains acknowledgement after the victory.
Later on, Phil interrupts Hercules' garden date with Meg by redirecting him to training and chastising him for missing practice. When Hercules leaves on Pegasus, leaving Phil in the garden, the latter watches Meg chatting with Hades. Phil rushes to Hercules' side to warn him, sparking a confrontation and forcing Phil to leave.
As the Titans attack Olympus, Hercules loses his strength due to a deal with Hades. Phil initially abandons him but is convinced by Meg to return. After Hercules defeats the Titans, he decides to stay on Earth with Meg, and Zeus creates the constellation of Hercules in the sky which makes Phil cry as it has been the dream of his life.
